What is ice and water shield?
Ice and water shield is a self-adhesive, rubberized waterproof membrane applied to roof decks that creates a secondary water barrier at high-risk areas prone to ice dams, wind-driven rain, and flashing leaks.
This membrane consists of a rubberized asphalt backing bonded to a polyethylene or foil top surface. It adheres directly to the roof deck and seals around fastener holes and overlapping edges, creating a watertight second line of defense against water intrusion. Unlike traditional felt underlayment, ice and water shield does not require nails or staples to hold it in place, relying instead on its adhesive properties to remain bonded even as the roof expands and contracts.
In Georgia's climate, ice and water shield protects against two primary threats. First, heavy rainfall and wind-driven rain during severe storms can force water underneath roof shingles and into the structure, particularly in valleys where water concentrates and at eaves where wind pressure is strongest. Second, though ice dams are less common in Georgia than northern states, they still occur during occasional winter events, and the membrane prevents backup water from entering the home when ice forms along the gutterline.
Most roofing contractors install ice and water shield along all eaves, valleys, around roof penetrations like vents and chimneys, and anywhere else the deck slopes steeply or water naturally pools. Building codes in many Georgia jurisdictions now require it. When choosing roof replacement providers, verify they specify ice and water shield coverage in their proposals, as it is a critical but sometimes overlooked component of a weather-resistant roof system.
