What is a low-slope roof?

A low-slope roof has a pitch below 3:12 inches of rise per 12 inches of run, typically found on commercial and industrial buildings, and requires weather-tight membranes rather than overlapping shingles for water shedding.

A low-slope roof has a pitch below 3:12 (less than 3 inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). This gentle angle is common on warehouses, office parks, retail buildings, and many multi-unit residential structures in Georgia. The shallow angle means water drains more slowly than on steep-slope roofs, so different materials become necessary to prevent pooling and leaks.

Because water cannot run off quickly, low-slope roofs rely on continuous, weather-tight membranes instead of overlapping shingles. Standard membrane options include:
