What is roof flashing?

Metal strips or sheets installed at joints, valleys, chimneys, and wall intersections on a roof to seal gaps and redirect water away from vulnerable areas.

Roof flashing consists of metal pieces, typically aluminum or galvanized steel, that bridge the gaps where different roof sections meet or where penetrations like chimneys, vents, and skylights break through the roof plane. These metal barriers create a waterproof seal at points where standard roofing materials cannot fully protect against water intrusion.

Flashing is essential in several critical areas. Valley flashing channels water down the angle where two roof slopes meet. Chimney flashing wraps around the base of the chimney and overlaps with surrounding shingles or roofing material. Wall flashing covers the junction where a roofline meets a vertical wall or exterior structure. Step flashing ties individual pieces together where a roof meets a wall in a stepped pattern, while drip edge flashing extends along the perimeter to guide water away from fascia and soffit.

Without proper flashing installation and maintenance, water can penetrate beneath roofing material and damage the underlying decking, framing, and insulation. Gaps, deterioration, or improper overlap in flashing are common sources of roof leaks.
