What is soffit and fascia?

Soffit is the horizontal underside of a roof overhang, while fascia is the vertical trim board that runs along the roof edge and supports gutters and gutter systems.

Soffit and fascia are structural trim elements installed where your roof meets the exterior walls. Soffit is the horizontal underside of the roof overhang (the part you see when looking up at the edge of your roof), while fascia is the vertical board that sits below the soffit and forms the outermost edge of the roof line.

Fascia serves as the primary mounting surface for gutters and downspouts, which channel water away from your foundation and siding. Soffit, often vented, allows air to circulate through your attic and roof structure, preventing moisture buildup and extending the life of framing and insulation. This ventilation pathway works together with ridge vents or other exhaust openings to maintain proper attic air flow.

Both soffit and fascia experience weather exposure and are common failure points where rot, gaps, or deterioration can develop. Damaged fascia can't hold gutters securely, leading to water overflow and foundation damage. Blocked or deteriorated soffit vents reduce attic ventilation and can trap moisture. Materials range from wood (which requires regular maintenance) to aluminum and vinyl composites that resist rot and extend the service life of these components.

When roof repairs involve gutter systems or attic ventilation, soffit and fascia condition should be inspected. Find roof repair contractors in your area who can assess and replace these components when needed.
